Ribbing is commonly used to finish off garments, ideal for hemlines, collars and cuffs.
However, ribbed knit has also become increasingly popular for garment making - tank tops, t-shirts, leggings and lounge-wear.
1x1 rib knit is constructed by alternating 1 rib stitch with 1 purl stitch.
2x2 rib knit is constructed by alternating 2 rib stitches with 2 purl stitches.
2x2 ribbing has a 'chunkier' apearance, with the ridges wider than the 1x1 ribbing.
Tips for choosing the appropriate ribbing fabric for your next project:
Use 1x1 ribbing for thinner knits such as lycra and jersey below 200gsm, and 2x2 for thicker knits (above 200gsm) including french terry, double knits, merino jersey and heavyweight cotton lycra.
